4482 [SASAPARI]: A London-based Platform Connecting Contemporary Art Between Korea and the UK

4482[SASAPARI] is a London-based non-profit arts organisation that serves as a platform connecting contemporary art between South Korea and the United Kingdom. The name “4482” combines the international dialling codes of the UK (44) and Korea (82), symbolising cultural exchange and artistic dialogue between the two countries.

The organisation was founded in 2007 by Korean students studying visual arts in the UK. At the time, they sought to create opportunities to present their work to a wider audience in London, beyond the confines of graduate exhibitions. What followed was a series of annual exhibitions featuring artists from various institutions, and this independent, artist-led initiative continued through to 2013.

After 2013, the initial wave of artist-led activity came to a close, and the organisation entered a period of hiatus. In 2017, a new team was formed, marking the relaunch of 4482 through a process of rebranding and restructuring. Building upon its original foundation, the organisation began to explore a broader and more expanded direction.

Today, 4482 is composed not only of artists, but also curators, arts management practitioners, and individuals from a range of professional backgrounds who share a strong interest in the arts. While maintaining their respective careers, members contribute their time on a voluntary basis, collectively shaping the organisation’s operations as well as the planning and delivery of exhibitions and projects.

Within this structure, the direction of 4482 has gradually evolved. While it initially focused on providing a platform for artists to present their work, it has since developed into a collaborative space where individuals from diverse backgrounds engage through art. Members bring their own perspectives and expertise, approaching exhibitions and events as a form of collective creative practice.

Over time, differing views have emerged regarding the organisation’s direction and methods of operation. Some individuals involved in its early stages have expressed that the current approach differs from its original intent. However, the broader artistic landscape and the needs of emerging artists have also changed. In response, 4482 has continued to redefine its role within the present context, adjusting its direction based on the perspectives and needs of its current team rather than remaining fixed in the past.

4482 aims to promote contemporary artistic exchange between Korea and the UK, and to create opportunities for emerging artists to be introduced within an international context. Starting from London, it seeks to connect artists and audiences across the UK and Europe, expanding artistic dialogue through exhibitions and programmes.

Since 2022, the organisation has further broadened its scope, moving beyond a focus solely on Korean artists in the UK to include collaborations with emerging artists active both in the UK and South Korea. Through this expansion, 4482 continues to strengthen its role as a platform that connects artists and industry professionals, contributing to the development of new artistic dialogues and networks.

Currently, 4482 facilitates communication between artists and audiences through exhibitions, events, and collaborative projects, while actively contributing to the formation of ideas and networks within the contemporary art landscape.
